Sue is an experienced and well-respected litigator whose expertise is recognised in the leading directories. Her practice is broad, encompassing finance litigation, sanctions, civil fraud and corporate and commercial disputes. Clients value her responsiveness and her commitment to finding solutions to complex problems. She leads the firm's sanctions practice and co-heads the firm's "technically strong" finance litigation team.

Sue is recognised as a leading individual for commercial litigation and banking litigation in Legal 500 2023. Clients have described her as 'a very experienced litigation partner, with the magical combination of being a tough litigator while also being easy and fun to work with!’ and as 'a force of nature and a brilliant litigator. While she has excellent common sense and an instinctive grasp of the commercialities of a case, she is also a talented lawyer and team leader.’ (Legal 500 2023). Meanwhile, she is described as "excellent" in Chambers UK 2023.

Sue also leads the firm's sanctions practice, having practised sanctions law for over 14 years. She advises on a range of contentious and non-contentious issues arising in relation to the Russian, Iranian, Libyan and Syrian sanctions regimes. There are very few firms in the City which can match Stephenson Harwood's experience in this area.

Nat has a particular interest in faith-based charities and students’ unions. She acts for Christian denominational bodies, Bible colleges, religious orders, and other faith-based charities, as well as students’ unions and a range of other charities.

She advises across the full spectrum of stakeholders and processes on the most complex domestic and cross-border restructuring matters. Recent high-profile mandates include acting for Bulb Energy on its response to the energy crisis, Revlon’s international group on the implications of the US Chapter 11 filings, Debenhams on its light touch administration and sale of assets to boohoo, and the lenders to certain Intu entities on debt and equity restructurings.

Stephen has specialised in clinical negligence work since qualification, with particular expertise in cerebral palsy, spinal and amputation cases. Over many years has consistently secured million pound plus awards: since joining Leigh Day in 2015 these include awards of ?13m (spinal claim, 2021), ?10.677m (cerebral palsy, 2021), ?2.25 (spinal claim, 2019) and ?1m (minor birth injury, 2017); recently (2021) secured interim payment of ?1.75m on account of damages in an ongoing cerebral palsy claim, and damages of ?850,000 for an avoidable forefoot amputation (2022). Previously acted for Denise Hendry, wife of former Scotland footballer Colin Hendry, obtaining then highest award ever made in a cosmetic surgery case. Stephen has a specific interest in Inquiry and inquest work: represented over 100 patients at Ashworth Hospital in Fallon Inquiry; he acted as Solicitor to Royal Liverpool Children’s Inquiry (“Alder Hey Inquiry”) and Redfern Inquiry into tissue sampling (“Sellafield Inquiry”); and regularly represents families personally at inquests.

Jennifer leads Acuity’s Property Litigation team.

Having joined Acuity from a major, tier 1-ranked regional firm in 2020, she has grown the property litigation team and was promoted to Senior Partner in 2022. She handles a considerable caseload, including complex and high-value claims and is recognised by both The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for her prowess in property litigation.

Jennifer specialises in a wide range of complex commercial and residential property litigation, including regularly advising landlords and tenants (individual, corporate and public bodies) in relation to retail, office, industrial, residential and mixed-use premises.

She also represents property developers in connection with complex disputes surrounding acquisition, development and sale of freehold land, and has experience of advising banking clients regarding management of property portfolios and property disputes arising through the administration of estates.

Jennifer regularly acts for management company clients in relation to high-value latent defect claims (including a large number of non-complaint fire-safety disputes post-Grenfell) against developers and insurers.

She also advises social housing clients in relation to various housing management issues, as well as their commercial property matters.

Career

Andrew is an IP lawyer who helps clients with various issues relating to innovation in a range of different technologies. He is enthusiastic about the on-going potential of innovation to help society to overcome pressing challenges and to drive the 21st century economy forward. Andrew sees intellectual property rights as playing a key role in fostering the development of new technologies. He has a keen interest in the technical as well as legal details of his matters, stemming from his scientific background and, ultimately, his enjoyment of understanding 'how things work'.

Andrew has an exceptionally strong track record in the life sciences sector, having advised clients on complex, strategically important patent litigation in this field for almost a decade. In this context he has worked for major global pharmaceutical companies including Gilead and F. Hoffmann-La Roche on significant cases in the English High Court and Court of Appeal involving some of their most valuable products. He has also advised these and other life sciences clients on European and global patent litigation strategy (including in relation to the Unified Patent Court (UPC)) and has worked with law firms from around the world, attending proceedings in Norway, Canada and Australia and at the European Patent Office.

Andrew also works with clients across various other sectors on a range of other intellectual property issues, including in relation to freedom to operate analysis, the negotiation of collaboration / commercialisation / license agreements, patent strategy and corporate mergers and acquisitions. In recent years Andrew has developed a particular interest in the energy sector and the role that IP has to play in powering the energy transition by supporting the on-going development of the new, low carbon technologies that the world needs.

Andrew is also a mental health advocate within the legal profession. After suffering a prolonged and, at times, severe bout of anxiety and depression in the mid-2010s he went on to share his experiences with a range of organisations through his talk 'Mind Your Head! What I Wish I'd Known About Anxiety & Depression'. Andrew has also participated in panel discussions at Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol Universities and the Legal Week Commercial Litigation & Arbitration Forum on the subject of mental health and the legal profession. He has also been interviewed on the BBC 5 Live in relation to mental health at work and walked 100 kilometres along the Thames Path over two days raising awareness (and over ?4,800) for Mind, the mental health charity. He Chairs HSF's Mental Health Champion Steering Committee for the West Region (UK, US & EMEA) and was recently named a mental health Emerging Leader by InsideOut.
