Practice Areas

Stephen Brett specialises in transactional IP matters. The majority of his clients are universities, research funders, charities and NHS bodies. He works mainly in the research and healthcare arenas where he advises on funding terms and research related agreements as well as on commercialisation arrangements and on wider intellectual property and data protection questions. In recent years, he has been involved in a number of Covid related projects and has developed a particular interest in the use of patient data and the commercialisation of datasets.

In addition, a significant minority of his clients are technology rich SMEs. He aims to develop longstanding relations, advising on commercial, data protection and intellectual property matters.

During his career, Stephen has served as the senior in-house lawyer at Oxford University Innovation, the technology transfer company of the University of Oxford. He has worked on a secondment basis with universities and a research funder and has held a fixed term appointment advising Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This rare mix of experience has given him a keen appreciation of the needs and priorities of both research and commercial clients.
