What should I do if I’m called in for police questioning?
1 answerI’ve been asked to attend a police interview. What are my rights and how should I prepare for it?
Understand your rights: Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), you have the right to remain silent, but anything you say can be used as evidence.
Contact a solicitor: You have the right to free legal advice before and during the interview. Always consult a solicitor to understand the implications of the questioning.
Prepare your documents: Bring any identification or documents requested by the police.
Know the purpose: Ask the police if you are being questioned as a witness, suspect, or for background information.
During the interview: Stay calm, listen carefully to the questions, and answer truthfully or decline to answer where appropriate.
More information can be found in the PACE Code of Practice on GOV.UK.
